Importance of college education
Today’s workplace is sophisticated hence requires a well trained personnel to handle himself and various things around him properly. Education is the key to most of the employment opportunities available today (Hanford, 2013). When one is well trained in the college, he/she is well equipped with knowledge of handling today’s workplace. A college educated individual most likely to secure a job than an individual who has not reached the college level of education (Saundy 2010). For adults between the ages of 20-24, the unemployment rate was 2.6 times higher than those of college graduates (Saundy, 2010). This is clear evidence that college education increases the chances of an individual securing a job. The unemployment rate for individuals with at least a bachelor’s degree is consistently a half the unemployment rate of the high school graduates. Therefore, the level of poverty among high school graduates is higher than those of college graduates. Post-secondary education also leads to higher job satisfaction. This is because there is wide variety of jobs to choose from. This is always coupled with higher salaries. Women with college degrees were shown to earn 79% higher than those women with high school diploma (Hanford, 2013). College educated workers are also more likely to benefit from pension plans than their high school graduated counterparts. Research showed that 70% of college graduates were offered pension plans compared to 55% of their high school graduates counterparts.
College education has also been proven to have a positive impact on the economy (Hanford). Report also shows that federal governments enjoys increased tax revenues from college graduates and spend less on income support programmes for them (Malaine, 2012). Adults with higher levels of education are more active citizens than those without college education. These educated people have also been proven to lead healthier lifestyles than their non-educated counterparts. This also reduces the expenses of healthcare hence a reprieve to the government. The tax which would have been used for their medication used in alternative development projects (Hanford, 2013).
College educated individuals have also been proven to have better health (Saundy, 2013). This is because they are more likely than others to receive health insurance and pensions benefits from their employers (Saundy). Research shows that 68% of college graduates benefit from health insurance coverage compared to50% of the high school graduated counterparts (Saundy). From their education, they are also more likely to understand the benefits of healthy living. The smoking rate among college graduates is 9% compared with the smoking rate of high school graduates which is 27% (Saundy, 2013). This is largely due to their lack of information on the health risk of smoking. The college education helps to have sense of job satisfaction which in turn lowers the stress levels thus promoting the health benefits in an individual (Malaine). Individuals with higher levels of education were also found to be engaging in exercise than those with low education (Advocay, 2012).
