The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative did a lot of work to ensure that the future of nursing is secure thus leading to the IOM report (Hellwig, 2013). The report that was produced calls on nurses to ensure that they take a greater role since, the healthcare system in America is increasingly becoming complex. The report that was produced is recommended to all nurses by the ANA and also acknowledges that there is need for nurses to take roles in leadership in all the settings since this will ensure that the demands that are presented by the changing healthcare system are met.
The partnership was proposed in 2008 by RWJF when they approached the IOM with the aim of transforming the nursing profession. The partnership that resulted created a blend of content experience and organizational expertise that was drawn on the mission of IOM of serving as an advisor to the nation on matters of improving health. The RWJF also contributed since it had a longstanding commitment to ensuring that there is the necessary capacity by the nursing workforce regarding skill, competence, and numbers to meet the public healthcare needs. Since this committee recognized that the nursing fraternity faces different challenges, the committee established a two-year strategic plan on the future of nursing. The paper provides a precise discussion on the works of the RWJFCI and the IOM that facilitated the creation of the IOM report. Moreover, the paper provides the importance of the IOM on the future of nursing and the role that the state-based action coalitions play in the facilitating the future of nursing
The work of RWJF and IOM that led to the IOM report
The RWJF committee on the future of nursing developed a vision aimed at transforming the health care system during its work. It is during this time that the committee recognized the demands and the limitations of the healthcare system. Furthermore, a future system was envisioned that would make access to the quality care to the diverse populations in the US easy while promoting wellness and the prevention of diseases. There are various works that the committee did that led to the IOM report.
The capacity of the nursing workforce was examined by the RWJF and IOM so that the demands for reforms in the healthcare and public health system are met. Moreover, a set of national recommendations were developed by the committee, and they address the nursing services delivery in an environment which had the shortage of nurses. The education system was also examined and recommendations made on its capacity.
The committee examined the policies both institutional and public at the state, national and local levels so as to know the changes that are needed in these sectors (Clancy, 2009). A range of changes in the systems was devised including ways that are innovative to solve the shortage of nurses in the US. The main aim of this committee was in the identification of the roles of the nurses both in designing and implementing a healthcare system that is more effective and efficient. In particular, the committee conceptualized the role that nurses play within the entire workforce, societal issue, the shortage of nurses and the future and current technology and provided recommendations on these issues.
The committee saw that there was the need to have more nurses and for this reason they provided recommendations on how nurses that are well prepared in various settings can be attracted and retained. The recommendations on the expansions of the nursing faculty were also made so as to increase the number of students admitted to the nursing schools and redesign the nursing education. This would help assure that an adequate number of qualified nurses are produced by the nursing schools to meet the demanding healthcare system.
The importance of the IOM report
The IOM report is an examination of how the education, roles, and responsibilities of nurses should change so as to meet the needs of the diverse population that are increasingly aging and how to respond to a healthcare system that is complex and evolving. There is a critical intersection between the patients’ needs across the lifespan on healthcare, and the readiness of nurses is the main point of focus in the recommendations in the report (Graber, 2015). The intention of these recommendations is to support the efforts on improving healthcare for all the Americans by enhancing the contribution of nurses to improving care delivery.
The report is important in the sense that it is used by health systems, governmental agencies, educators and policy makers to inform and implement the strategies that will mitigate the emerging challenges facing the nursing workforce. Moreover, judicious information is provided by the report on the status of the nursing workforce also serves as a foundation I addressing the nursing shortage that is projected which will otherwise impact the future of the delivery of healthcare.
The role of state-based action coalitions
The state-based action coalitions are led by business partners and nurses in the different states in the US, and their role is to drive change locally by working so as to use nursing in transforming the nature of healthcare. In every state, the action coalitions carry out the work of the campaign at all levels including local, regional, and state levels. Moreover, the action coalitions also strengthen nurse leadership and the nursing workforce so as to improve the healthcare of all Americans.
The IOM report has been received well with the nursing fraternity, and it is hoped that nurses have a great future. Many nurses are returning to school so as to further their education. Moreover, many education institutions and communities are determined to accomplish the goals that are set by this report. There is a continued need for nursing leaders that are innovative and those who will engage in various research practices so as to help in developing products that will be a solution to health and the healthcare system. The works that were done by the committee that led to this report was vital to the future of nurses is now bright.
